For Super-8 Sound Film Copies to DVD, MiniDV Video

Tobin Video Transfer

TCS TVT-S8S

Self-Contained Film to Video Transfer Machine

The telecine projector, optical system and high quality video camera module are built in to one compact, easy to use unit. Available for super-8 only, NTSC or PAL. One or three running speeds (see below.) The best equipment on the market today for efficiently copying consumer sound home movies to today's DVD format.

Replaces Elmo Transvideo.
The TVT-S8S telecine models are designed for making higher quality video transfers, with high productivity, from typical super-8 home movie film with normal magnetic sound. Totally flickerless running without speed

tweaking by the user, plus automatic or manual exposure, a footage counter, heavy duty construction, and other features. No hard to find expensive light bulbs to buy. The TVT-S8S 3CCD Deluxe model in particular prevents the objectionable sound pitch and "Keystone Kops" speed of movement errors found in other equipment, which can amount to 11% (18 sped up to 20) or even 39% (18 sped up to 25).

Direct Imaging Picture Quality. A CCD video pickup, a special macro lens system and our exclusive technology assures a sharp, steady, flicker-free image. Video outputs are standard video, also Y/C (S-Video) for optimum DVD and Mini-DV quality. No flicker adjustment knob is needed. The exposure level can be set fully manually if desired, or two automatic modes are provided.

3CCD Sound Deluxe: Absolutely Correct Sound Speeds. The TVT-S8S 3CCD Deluxe model runs super-8 sound film at the correct speeds of 18 and 24 FPS. Since 18 and 24 do not divide evenly into either the 59.94 or 50 Hz video scan rates, the film frames are blended together. This is not noticeable (at least to us) in normal viewing of the video program, but can be seen in a still frame. An additional 9 FPS speed is for checking threading etc. and is not usable for viewing or transfer. The crystal controlled speeds 18.0000 and 24.0000 are accurate within ±3 parts per million, or .0003%, so there is no sound pitch or pacing error to cause complaints. Exclusive newly invented TCS technology permits these speeds to be used without noticeable flicker. Available for NTSC or PAL video.
The TVT-S8S 3CCD Deluxe is shipped set for running normal 18 FPS amateur film; a programming change, with on-screen menu on your video monitor, is required for changing over to or from the 24 FPS speed. The required settings are given on a label inside the camera cover as well as in the instructions, and no special external equipment is needed.

1CCD: One Speed. The TVT-S8S economical 1CCD version does not quite run the film at the right speed but instead runs film at an adapted crystal controlled speed to suit the video. In NTSC the speed is 19.98 FPS. The 19.98 speed is about 11.1% fast compared to 18 and 16.7% slow compared to 24. In PAL the speed is 16.667 FPS. The 16.667 speed is about 7.5% slow compared to 18. Film scanning is frame by frame in real time with zero flicker. The slower frame advance of the Sound mechanism prevents our offering a multiple speed high virtual blade count non-Deluxe unit as in the Silent models.
An external harmonizer, detuner or pitch shifter is recommended (not included), to correct the pitch of voices and music. The pacing remains off but this is not as noticeable as the pitch error. The TVT-S8S 1CCD scans one film frame at a time, in real time while each frame is stationary in the gate, so each video field contains information from just one film picture. Electronic shuttering, instead of a physical shutter, gives absolutely zero flicker in the video.

Film Safety. A two-tooth pulldown claw distributes stress for minimal perforation wear. Fast and simple automatic threading. Push-type loop setter, with loop restorer knob and ratcheting sprockets for resetting lost loops. The TVT-S8S requires that film be in good condition with accurate and solid splices. For silent films with a lot of defects or bad splices, you might want to also choose for these the TVT-8B
manual threading model (not included), with fewer bends in the film's path and sprocketless drive so there are no loops to be lost.

Footage Counter. No customer arguments if you can write an exact figure on their bill!  Reel capacity is 600 feet (180 meters.) A high-speed rewind is provided and it works without running the mechanism.

Audio Reproduction. The TVT-S8S reproduces sound from the standard magnetic recording stripe, and outputs are -10 dBv unbalanced through an RCA phono jack, and +4 dBu electronically balanced through an XLR jack.

Heavy Duty Construction.

The 1CCD and 3CCD versions are identical in external appearance except for the 3CCD sticker and Speed knob on that model. Instructions are here:    3CCD

TVT-S8S 1CCD for super-8 sound film is $4600. (Pitch Shifter or Harmonizer not included.)

Our most popular model:
TVT-S8S 3CCD Sound Deluxe, for super-8 film with true 18 + 24 speed operation, is $7300.

Please
specify NTSC video output (USA type) or PAL video output (European type). Film counter for USA units measures feet, and overseas units can be set to measure meters. Let us know your preference. There may sometimes be a delay in obtaining the PAL 3CCD camera module.

Component outputs are available with 3CCD cameras for an additional
$100. Kindly indicate whether you want RGB or
Y, B-Y, R-Y (same as Y Pb Pr) signals. The Composite and Y/C outputs are not available with this option.

Ready to order now? Please see our ordering info
page. We are accepting orders for future shipment.

Not quite ready? Prospective purchasers can get our
free NTSC DVD demo disc on request. Please send an e-mail. The present demo disc does however not include super-8 sound film. We will update the demo when we have time.

Film Preparation note: Before copying film on any telecine equipment, it is recommended that the film be first inspected and defective splices and damaged sections removed. It should then be cleaned and lubricated. Directions and sources of supplies are given in the instructions. Our suggestions for splicing are here.
